What is the unforgivable sin?
The “unforgivable sin” is mentioned by Jesus in Gospel of Matthew 12:31–32, Gospel of Mark 3:28–30, and Gospel of Luke 12:10.
What did Jesus say?
“All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” (Matthew 12:31, KJV)
The Context (Very Important)
Jesus had just cast out a demon. The religious leaders saw the miracle but claimed He did it by the power of Satan. In other words:
They witnessed the clear work of the Spirit of God
They knowingly attributed it to the devil
They hardened their hearts against obvious truth
That is when Jesus warned them about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
So What Is It?
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the deliberate, persistent rejection of the Spirit’s testimony about Christ.
It is not:
A passing doubt
A moment of anger
A bad thought
Something said ignorantly
It is a hardened, settled decision to call the work of God evil and refuse repentance.
Why Is It “Unforgivable”?
Because forgiveness requires repentance.
If someone permanently rejects the Spirit’s conviction, they will never seek forgiveness.
It’s not that God is unwilling to forgive.
It’s that the person refuses the only means of forgiveness.
A Very Important Comfort
If someone is worried they may have committed the unforgivable sin, that concern itself is evidence they have not. A hardened heart does not fear conviction.
